BLUE AZORES PROGRAM
Unique, rich, yet fragile, the Azorean Sea has formed the cultural identity of the Azorean people and sustained their way of life for generations. Protecting these critical marine ecosystems is essential to ensure a healthy ocean for Azorean society now and for future generations to come.
The Blue Azores Program is a collaborative program, led by the Regional Government of the Azores, dedicated to marine ecosystems and the implementation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), to protect, promote and enhance the natural capital of the Azores sea, based on the best knowledge scientific research, in collaboration with the University of the Azores.

BE A PART OF THE CHANGE
A review of the Azores Marine Protected Areas Network (RAMPA) is in the process of public consultation.
The Regional Government of the Azores took another step towards the protection of the Azorean sea, by placing in public consultation the draft amendment to the Regional Legislative Decree that structures the Network of Marine Protected Areas of the Azores (RAMPA), developed through the Blue Azores program.
Based on the best scientific knowledge available in the region, this preliminary proposal is part of the review of the Marine Park of the Azores and results from a participatory co-creation process, which involved representatives from various sectors of the region.
Under the European Strategy for Biodiversity 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, the Azores committed to protecting, by the end of 2023, 30% of its sea, through Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), with at least 15% fully protected.
The challenges of nature conservation and the sustainable economic development of the sea invite everyone to participate in building this vision of the future, based on a healthy and productive sea and a vibrant blue economy.
