SCIENCE

AZORES
SEA

The Azores Sea is one of the most important marine environments in the North Atlantic, home to rich biodiversity that urgently needs protection.

Representing 55% of Portugal’s Exclusive Economic Zone, this vast sea is crucial to the local economy — particularly the fishing sector and marine ecotourism — and holds great potential in areas such as marine biotechnology, the blue carbon market, and scientific research.

Preserving this natural heritage is essential to ensure the continuity of marine life and the ecological, economic, and social benefits it provides.

SCIENTIFIC
EXPEDITIONS

The Blue Azores program was enriched by two scientific expeditions carried out in 2016 and 2018, which provided a detailed view of the Azores’ marine ecosystems

The results of these expeditions confirmed the diversity and vitality of marine life in the region, but also revealed the pressures and threats it faces — underscoring the urgent need for protection.

This data, together with other research, is essential to inform conservation efforts and the sustainable management of the archipelago’s marine resources.

MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
(MPAs)

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are zones where human activity is regulated to be compatible with the recovery and conservation of marine life.

Internationally recognized as the most effective tool for ocean protection, MPAs offer long-term ecological, economic, and social benefits — contributing to food security, climate regulation, and resilience to climate change. Effective management of these areas is crucial to ensure a healthy and sustainable ocean for future generations.
